Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio

Eero Aarnio is a Finnish interior designer born in Helsinki on July 21, 1932. In the 1960s, he made furniture like plastic and fiberglass chairs ahead of time. [1]

Aarnio went to school at Helsinki's Institute of Industrial Arts and opened his own office in 1962. The next year, he made the Ball Chair, an empty sphere on a stand with one side open so a person could sit inside. he also made the Bubble Chair, which was clear and hung from the ceiling. His Pastil Chair was a molded armchair that looked like a beanbag, and his Tomato Chair was a molded seat between three spheres that held it up. As the name suggests, his Screw Table looked like a flat-headed screw that had been driven into the ground. In 1968, the American Industrial Design Award was given to him.

Aarnio's designs were a big part of popular culture in the 1960s and were often used in the sets of science-fiction films from that time. [3] His designs were perfect for these kinds of shows because they were made up of very simple geometric shapes. Eero Aarnio keeps developing new ideas, like children's toys and furniture. In Helsinki, Eero Aarnio opened his first Design Eero Aarnio Showroom and official store. You can find Aarnio's current designs, prototypes, and news there.

Born

Eero Aarnio, a Finnish designer born in 1932, attended school at Helsinki's Institute of Industrial Arts from 1954 to 1957. In 1962, he opened his own interior and industrial design office.

He was interested in new furniture ideas and made the Ball Chair in 1963. It wasn't completed until a few years later. Material (fiberglass) and form were completely new to furniture.

In the following years, fiberglass, used to make boats, became one of Aarnio's favorite products. Fiberglass was strong and easy to work with, so Aarnio could make comfortable and interesting shapes.

He became known worldwide with the Pastil Chair, which won the American Industrial Design Award in 1968, and the Tomato Chair. These chairs can be used inside or outside and can even swim! Also, Pastil Chair shows a new and unusual way to think about a moving chair.
