                     Eero Saarinen

Eero Saarinen was a Finnish-American builder and industrial designer known for his neo-futuristic style.He was born on August 20, 1910, and died on September 1, 1961. Saarinen is known for building the Washington Dulles International Airport outside Washington, D.C., the TWA Flight Centre in New York City, and the Gateway Arch in St. Louis, Missouri.He was the son of Eliel Saarinen, who was a well-known Finnish builder.

 

Eero Saarinen was born on his father's 37th birthday, August 20, 1910, to Finnish builder Eliel Saarinen and his second wife, Louise.  [1][2] They moved to the United States when Eero was 13 years old in 1923.  [1][2] He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where his father taught and was dean of the Cranbrook Academy of Art. There, he took classes in sculpture and furniture design. [3] He was close with fellow students Charles and Ray Eames, and Florence Knoll (née Schust) became a good friend. [4]

In September 1929, Saarinen studied sculpture at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Paris, France. [4] He studied architecture at Yale, where he finished in 1934.[5][1] After that, he toured Europe and North Africa for a year and then returned to his home country of Finland for a year. In 1940, Saarinen became an American citizen by naturalization. [6]
